Business Gaming Methods for Developing Competence in Knowledge Management (KITS)                                                                     2000 - 2003

What is the KITS project?

Many of you will already be aware of the recently completed KITS project. The principal output of the project is an educationally supported, distributed game in the domain of knowledge management. that has now been branded "KM Quest". KM Quest is now moving into its market commercialisation phase, which is being coordinated by an ECLO member, Cibit of Utrecht.

Brief details of the KITS project are given below but if you are interested in the resulting KM Quest product or require further information please follow the link www.kmquest.com

If your own organisation is seeking further to develop its expertise in Knowledge Management, or if Km Quest might form part of the portfolio of products and services that you offer to clients you can contact;

Knowledge management has received increasing attention during the last few years. This is partly due to the awareness that advanced economies will rely increasingly on their ability to create and deploy knowledge for competitive advantage. However, this is easier said than done. Especially at the level of individual companies the systematic and effective management of knowledge assets is still far from perfect. This seems to be partly due to the fact that a coherent and well-supported methodology for knowledge management is lacking. As a consequence many knowledge management activities are more guided by available (IT) solutions than a thorough understanding of nature of the relations between initial problem (or opportunity) statement and the organisational solution or measure that serves its purpose well. The main aim of the KITS project, therefore, was to improve the capabilities of people involved in knowledge management at different levels in the organisation.

The objectives of the KITS project were to develop and evaluate a learning environment that comprises an educationally supported, distributed simulation in the domain of knowledge management. This environment is constructivist since learners are in charge and have to induce the knowledge management rules from the simulation; it is situated because the situations presented in the simulation are realistic and placed in the practical context of the participants, and it is collaborative since the players need to communicate to gain optimal results.

The KITS project had two starting points. First, the project built on developments in learning and instruction that are enabled by new technologies. Second, the project saw a need for better training of people in knowledge management, which is accompanied by a need for more detailed knowledge management models.

The target group for KITS is KM specialists or managers who are not KM specialists but who will increasingly become involved in supporting knowledge-based business development strategies.

We thank those members who attended the various awareness sessions, participated in the evaluation of prototypes or in other ways provided information as to the market need for a product such as KM-Quest.
